mogwai - mr. beast [May. 8th, 2010|11:21 pm]
sharing music and culture.

_hyperbole_
my night has consisted of intoxication amidst candle light. i might as well follow the path i've been on and give you insight to the albums that i've been listening to throughout my evening.

i've been listening to mogwai since high school. i used to walk down the outdoor hallways while stoned and smoking cigarettes, while retaining a certain danceable hop to my step and listening to this band through headphones. it's been a decade of wonder.

nearly 100% instrumental post rock. sometimes they add vocals, and in all honesty it kills it. otherwise a perfect band from scotland.

people do cocaine. people do ecstasy. people dance. when these things culminate it turns into things like neon indian. it's ridiculous, i know. regardless, it's well worth it. this album will bring a happy rot to your gut.

hanne hukkelberg - blood from a stone [May. 2nd, 2010|07:22 pm]
sharing music and culture.

_hyperbole_
hanne hukkelberg is a recent discovery of mine, and i've been stuck on this album for a week or so. she kind of reminds me of a mix between tom waits and joanna newsome. blood from a stone is super eclectic and minimalistic. it ranges from being upbeat and uplifting to being hauntingly gorgeous. the track below is my favorite off the album, and i catch myself listening to it around ten times a day.

devo - duty now for the future. [Apr. 28th, 2010|11:29 pm]

de-evolution is real.

i don't know how many of you have only heard "whip it". devo is like a circus side show of simplistic musical wonders. punk rock blended with strange early electronic bliss. their acceptance and clear view of reality helped me form my independent thought as a wee lad. i bring you their second album. straight from pits of akron, ohio. duty now, spuds.

marc ribot's ceramic dog - party intellectuals [Apr. 23rd, 2010|08:58 pm]
sharing music and culture.

_hyperbole_
it's a friday at home. i've spent the day recovering from a hell of a hangover, and listening to music.

marc ribot is one of the most underrated guitar players of our time. his career has been long, and he's spent time working with countless artists. most notably would be the fact that he's been playing guitar for tom waits ever since rain dogs. i've been digging his work for years now.

ceramic dog is one of his many projects. it's a bit on the experimental side, but it gets regular spins from me. party intellectuals has some beautiful songs on it. give it a shot.

and just to keep it even...

i'm not quite sure what to think of the one that simply goes by the name of lola. she uses a mixture of animals, and porcelain like people. she's a stickler for detail, and often includes small details that you might miss on first glance. i'll let her speak for herself:

"my work is always heavily influenced by all of our vulnerabilities and how to recognize our own strength. i had a lonely childhood, so i feel stuck there. i spent most of my waking hours with toys and a good dose of imagination. every time i go back and investigate, i come up with weird painting ideas. it's always safe there before life got its real hands on me"

it's time for the maiden voyage. i'd break the bottle of champagne across the hull, but it's wine, and i'm drinking it instead.

i'll kick her off with a band that i've been utterly stuck on for over a year now. i can't get enough. mum is a band from iceland. it's at least half electronic, but it's always blissful. is it possible to have electronic elements and still sound organic? apparently, yes. a lot of their material comes off as euphoric or melancholy, while at the same time being blissful and uplifting. there's female vocals that pop in every now and then on this album, and i love them to death. apparently this girl left the band a few years ago, and the two albums that have followed can't hold a candle to the ones that came before.

so go download it. listen to this whole damn album, and get stuck on it like i did.
